Our freedom to choose between eternal life or spiritual death is indeed a reason to “cheer up.”

This gift of freedom to choose was assured by the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, but each of us must choose which path to take and act accordingly.

President Thomas S. Monson has often taught, “Decisions determine destiny.” Because of the atonement of Christ, each of us possesses the freedom to choose where our lives will lead.

Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. (2 Nephi 2:27)
